Album

God Don't Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson Alligator Records earned Grammy Award nominations for Best Roots Gospel Album and Best American Roots Performance for Blind Boys of Alabama recording of Mother's Children Have a Hard Time. The compilation was produced by Jeffrey Gaskill of Burning Rose Productions. The package features extensive historical liner notes by author Michael Corcoran. Gaskill first heard Johnson's haunting, knife-like slide guitar and moaning gospel-blues in 2003, then made two investigative trips to Texas to learn more. There wasn't much: Michael Corcoran's excellent historical liner essay here admits that what we don't know about Johnson could sink the Titanic. God Dont Never Change, an 11-song ode to the great blues howler and gospel progenitor Blind Willie Johnson, feels a little like all of those at once. Produced by tribute-compilation veteran Jeffrey Gaskill, powered by an ambitious crowdfunding campaign, and issued by roots imprint Alligator Records, God Dont Never Change attempts to grapple with Johnsons impact on popular artists and genre purists alike. What does rap in 2016 have to say about Blind Willie Johnson Or metal Or a sample-driven producer. Songs in album God Don't Never Change: The Songs Of Blind Willie Johnson 2016. Tom Waits - The Soul Of A Man. Album 2016 11 Songs. Most of Blind Willie Johnsons recordings were traditional spirituals, but his definitive versions made blues history. This tribute features Americas mightiest roots-informed artists plus Irelands Sinead OConnor giving those songs a different spin. Blues rock guitar hero Luther Dickinson salutes Johnsons influential slide work with a slippery, serpentine take on Bye and Bye Im Going to See the King, while Lucinda Williams offers a greasy, barnstorming version of the albums title track. The Charters-produced 1957 album Blind Willie Johnson: His Story Folkways reissued more of Johnsons music, including If I Had My Way, Id Tear The Building Down, which the Grateful Dead called Samson And Delilah when they recorded it on 1977s Terrapin Station. Side one concentrated on Johnsons biography, with spoken remembrances from people who knew Blind Willie, most prominently Angeline. More than 55 years later, his son Luther Dickinson is one of the artists on God Dont Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson,an album of covers by such admirers as Tom Waits, Sinead OConnor, Lucinda Williams and many more. Then there's Blind Willie Johnson, whose song Jesus Is Coming Soon made the flu seem like the End of Days. Well, the nobles said to the people, You better close your public schools. Until the events of death has ending,. you better close your churches too. We done told you, our God's done warned you, Jesus coming soon. Cowan said, It could have been written yesterday. It put us all away, Wilentz said. Around the world everybody's, you know, social distancing.
