The Philosopher's Stone is a compilation album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison released in 1998 see 1998 in music. The songs released on this 2-CD thirty-track album were previously unreleased outtakes from 1969 to 1988. The album features twenty-five songs that had never been released and alternative renditions of The Street Only Knew Your Name Inarticulate Speech of the Heart, Wonderful Remark The Best of Van Morrison, Real Real Gone Enlightenment, Joyous Sound. 30 previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1971 and 1988. Track 1-1 recorded at Centry, 1971 track 1-2 recorded at Columbia, 1971 track 1-3 recorded at The Church, 1973 tracks 1-4 to 1-11 recorded at Caledonia, 1973, track 1-15 in 1976 tracks 1-12, 1-13, 2-6 recorded at Wisseloord, 1974 tracks 1-14, 2-1 to 2-5 recorded at Record Plant, 1975, tracks. THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE is proof positive that Van Morrison is almost as bad at choosing which songs to release and which to leave in the vaults as Paul McCartney is. Paul should really release a collection like this too, but that's another story altogether. Comprised of unreleased songs spanning the years from 1971-1988, this is a two-disc, two-and-a-half-hour windfall that belongs in the collection of any serious Van Fan.
