Chavis was born near Lake Charles, Louisiana to parents Arthur and Marceline Chavis in a Cajun Creole settlement called Pied des Chiens Dog Hill, and was the son of tenant farmers. He acquired the nickname Boozoo in his childhood, although the origin of the nickname is unknown. When asked by a reporter about his nickname, Chavis replied Man, I hate that question. Chavis had completed the recording of what would be his final album only a few weeks before his death. The Lake Charles Atomic Bomb Original Goldband Recordings. CD 2097. Boozoo Chavis born: Wilson Anthony Chavis was one of the pioneers of zydeco, the Cajun and blues hybrid originating in southwest Louisiana. Although his self-composed 1954 single, Paper in My Shoes, was the first zydeco hit, Chavis was distrustful of the music industry and refused to perform publicly or record again until 1984. Fourteen primitive sides made by zydeco cofounder Wilson Boozoo Chavis some time between 1955 and 1960 for Gold- band, the shoestring-budget Louisiana record company responsible for irking him into retirement for nearly three decades. Boozoo Chavis vaulted to fame in zydeco circles during the mid-'50s, when his gritty, anthemic Paper in My Shoe helped get the fledgling zydeco industry off the ground. The 14 tracks on this 1990 anthology showcase a younger, more vocally spry and dynamic Chavis, singing short, simple, two-step tunes and zydecoblues hybrids.
