Aerosmith is the eponymous debut studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released on January 5, 1973 by Columbia Records. Dream On, originally released as a single in 1973, became an American top ten hit when re-released in December 1975. The album peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard 200 album chart in 1976. After entering a partnership with Frank Connelly, David Krebs and Steve Leber invited members of two record labels Atlantic Records and Columbia Records to view an Aerosmith. The 2005 release Gold is a repackaging of the 2001 double-disc collection Young Lust, bearing a different title and cover but the same 34 songs as the previous release. While Young Lust had more distinctive, arguably more attractive, cover art - the new compilation fits into the overall look of Universal's Gold series, which is meant to be a thorough complement to their budget-line 20th Century Masters series - that's the only difference between the two compilations, so it's only useful to fans who. I'm not sure why people are so down on the 2-disc Aerosmith Gold collection. Sure there are dozens of Aerosmith compilations out there, and I get that Gold is essentially a repackaging of the Young Lust: The Aerosmith Anthology, but nobody is being forced to buy it. People (OK, maybe it's just me) recognize the quality of these Gold collections, and it makes sense that there would be an Aerosmith Gold collection.

For my part, I'm not a big Aerosmith fan, but wanted a collection of the better-known stuff, both pre- and post-Permanent Vacation. Gold provided that quite nicely. It features 34 songs, including a few live tracks, acoustic and orchestral alternate versions, a cover of the Doors hit "Love Me Two Times" and perhaps most importantly the legendary Run DMC collaboration on "Walk This Way". The songs have been digitally remastered for superior sound, and the price was reasonable. What's to complain about?

If you're a serious Aerosmith fan, there's really no need for you to own Gold. Likewise if you have the Young Lust collection, Gold isn't offering anything new. For casual fans like me though, Gold should prove to be all the Aerosmith you need (and then some).
